What Did Jesus Think of the Bible? – Part Seven

What Did Jesus Think of the Bible?

Part Seven

He puts His stamp of approval on it by virtue of His use of it.

How Jesus used the Bible

  • He acknowledged that all Scripture pointed to Him
  • He said He came to fulfill all Scripture
  • He verified the historicity different events and people
  • He quoted it during His temptation

He acknowledged that all Scripture pointed to Him Luke 24:27 – And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

Luke 24:44 – Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

John 5:39 – “You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me;

He came to fulfill all Scripture

Matt. 5:17 – “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill.”

Matt. 26:24 – “The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”

Matt. 26:54 -“How then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen this way?”

He verified the historicity of different events and people He quoted it during His temptation

Matt. 4:4 – But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘ Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'” (Deut. 8:3)

Matt. 4:7 – Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'” (Deut. 6:16)

Matt. 4:10 – Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan! For it is written, ‘ You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.'” (Deut. 6:13)

He quoted it in a synagogue

Is. 61:1-2 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives, And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,

Luke 4:16-20 – And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book, and found the place where it was written, ” The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are downtrodden, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord. “And He closed the book…

It’s clear that Jesus had a very high estimation of the Bible. One tenth of all He said came from the Old Testament. He relied upon the Bible constantly during His earthly ministry.
